The latest round of capitalist roulette has placed Tumblr at risk of malfunction or collapse. Not a lot of official news is available yet, but what there is sounds ominous. Are you moving to Dreamwidth? Find your Tumblr friends here.
Tumblr’s parent company, Automattic, has announced layoffs -- about 16% of its employees. TechCrunch is reporting 281 Automattic employees have lost their jobs. It’s unclear how many of those Automattic employees are Tumblr staff.
Another report looks even worse:
from my sources adjacent to tumblr–from which i can spread rumors and insider information freely because i dont give a fuck about ever working in the tech sector–im hearing this round of firings was focused on purging the senior staff, and not just from support but from the entire remaining tumblr workforce. i’m hearing there are about 25 people left.
That same post shares some crucial advice on coping with platform threats and collapses:
While I don’t think that Tumblr is about to shut down anytime soon, as a fandom old who lost my community and my people when the fandom diaspora happened from LiveJournal, I want to urge that you do something NOW:
Get your backup account(s) elsewhere NOW
Let your moots know your username(s) at those places NOW
Follow your moots at their places NOW
I mean this with all my heart. Get this done now. Get set up and find your people now. Tumblr is the home of fandom now, just as LiveJournal was the home of fandom way back. And you could end up losing your fandom home just as easily and quickly as us old LJ people did way back then.
If you click through the cut link, there is also a list of Tumblr alternatives to explore.
For those of you experienced with Dreamwidth, now is a good time to reach out to friends on Tumblr and invite them over here to see whether it suits their needs should Tumblr cease doing so. Watch for new users on Dreamwidth and give them a hand learning the ropes here.
If you're new here, browse the Links box and Resources tag for help getting started.

Date: Apr. 12th, 2025 05:47 am (UTC)😆 nahhh no worries! my display name and icon are specific references to the warrior cat book series, and a kittypet is a house cat. my icon isn't catching you anytime soon!
...though a toy version attached to a string may be a different matter... 🤔

That's good to hear.
>> im glad to see this newcomers community! im a big lurker but ive been feeling very cozy and at home here on DW. <<
It's okay to lurk. That lets you learn the style and culture of a platform or community before interacting.
>> cheers for this.<<
*bow, flourish* Happy to be of service.

Date: Apr. 12th, 2025 08:35 pm (UTC)Well ...
Date: Apr. 12th, 2025 09:24 pm (UTC)However, DW does work for images if you A) use the insert-image tool in the post creator to add the URL of one image from elsenet, or B) create your posts on a compatible platform like LJ then just copy-paste the code here, which is what I do.
In any case, people looking for a place to share images will likely need to find an image host elsewhere and then paste in here somehow.
