This post is especially for those folks coming to Dreamwidth from Cohost, who may wish to reconnect with other people they know from that venue.
Cohost is closing. Registration shut down on September 9 when the closure was announced. It will go read-only on October 1, 2024 and disappear entirely at the end of 2024. See "Cohost News" for more on this topic and what you can do about it. Use the "Introduction / Friending Meme" to say hello and meet new people here.
It's a good idea to make a farewell post on Cohost NOW while you still can (up through September 30, 2024). Tell people where else to find you online, whether your blog is moving or closing, and any other important details.
If you want to preserve your Cohost content, one thing you can do is save your farewell post, profile, or other pages using Wayback, Ghost, or other archive sites. This helps you and your friends remember what it looked like before it disappears. If you have art or fiction on Cohost, you may want to consider sites like AO3 that specialize in those materials. Many people are copying their Cohost content to Dreamwidth too.
Use this post to tell folks that you are on Dreamwidth, what your Cohost account was, and who you're looking for here that you knew back there. You can use the template in a comment below, on your blog, or anywhere else you find it useful. This one is shorter than the more detailed "Introduction / Friending Meme" is.

What was your Cohost account / blog(s)?
What kind of content did you post there? Will you be posting the same here?

Who were some of your Cohost friends that you hope to find on Dreamwidth or elsenet?
Do you have anything else important to share that will help networking?

What kind of content did you post there? Will you be posting the same here? Fandom-type stuff there, and fandom-type stuff here!
What are some other online platforms where people can find you now? Tumblr! I am also active on Pillowfort now, when it comes to non-tumblr tumblr-alikes.
Yay!

Date: Sep. 29th, 2024 08:09 pm (UTC)What kind of content did you post there? Will you be posting the same here? I did a mix of things! My most prominent public series was "Marine Science Mondays", a fairly short-lived series of effortposts about marine science facts and concepts. I also did a handful of book reviews, and posts about tabletop rpgs. One of my last big essays was a big informational post about singlet-plural relationships.
Currently the plan is after migrating all my big essays, I'll probably be doing a few more book reviews and casual posts about things I like? MSM was cool, but a lot of effort and very image-heavy, so if I opt to revive it here, it will have to use a lot more links and plaintext. I may go back to casual marine-science posting and see if people enjoy it before continuing it as a series.
What are some other online platforms where people can find you now? I'm on tumblr at in-mutual-weirdness.com, but I'm more of a reblogger than a blogger there. I'm on a handful of discord servers (Friends at the Table, Asians Represent!) and the Auldnoir forum.
Who were some of your Cohost friends that you hope to find on Dreamwidth or elsenet? Dunno! It seems like many of the people I liked seeing are either on other common platforms, or have opted to go elsewhere, but that's alright. I've been using dreamwidth's RSS feed function quite liberally to try and collate everyone into one spot for myself.

Date: Sep. 29th, 2024 09:57 pm (UTC)Marine science is fun.

There are various gaming communities here. For reviews, see

You might consider casual weekly posts and links to marine science news, with monthly or occasional anchor posts that are more intensive. Science Daily has a Sea Life subtopic.

Might you consider posting about that here? I've been making informative posts on various topics, but it's better to get them from people who are doing the thing when possible.

Date: Sep. 30th, 2024 08:29 pm (UTC)What kind of content did you post there? Will you be posting the same here? i was more of a consumer than a poster but i'd post commissioned art of my fursona and text posts about things i'm interested in or have discovered, especially stuff that related to preservation of old games and technology. it was also a nice place to be a cat on the internet. i see this place as being good for longer form posts about interesting things i come across and my own self reflections
What are some other online platforms where people can find you now? i post a lot on mastodon and sometimes stream on twitch
Hello!
Date: Sep. 30th, 2024 09:18 pm (UTC)That's totally fine, most people love comments.
>> but i'd post commissioned art of my fursona and text posts about things i'm interested in or have discovered,<<
Sounds cool. You can find some furry communities here and there are lots of art/craft communities on Dreamwidth.
>> especially stuff that related to preservation of old games and technology.<<

Exactly. Dreamwidth excels at long posts, although it is not limited to that. You can choose who gets to see what, if you want to keep introspections private or have a separate filter for those.

Date: Oct. 2nd, 2024 03:46 am (UTC)What kind of content did you post there? Most of my original content was microblogging. Periodically I would do "rock reading" divinations for people who sent me asks. A few times while on cohost I broke out a full essay (all of them were very different topics) which I will migrate over here eventually.
Will you be posting the same here? To be determined! I'll probably do the rock readings here too. I'm intrigued by the fiction writing community over here and maybe they'll lure me into posting some stuff.
What are some other online platforms where people can find you now? I have the same username on tumblr.
Do you have anything else important to share that will help networking? Being on cohost encouraged me to explore my interests (esp. interests I struggled with due to ADHD (reading, writing)) or interests I haven't been very involved in since high school and college (manga, video games, esp. indie ones) so I hope to talk about those things some here. I also like music (mostly pop).
Bonus I am a transgender man who transitioned a long time ago, and despite the fact that I like gay stuff of all kinds, I recently was made aware that I am tragically heterosexual. I'm still kind of processing that, so I'll probably talk about gender and sexuality some here.

Date: Oct. 2nd, 2024 04:16 am (UTC)That's a small but definite part of Dreamwidth, moreso since the Twitter exodus.

Readings used to be a very popular part of crowdfunding but I haven't seen them recently. You might mention that on

Those are good interests.

They're popular topics too, lots of QUILTBAG folks on Dreamwidth. You might like:

What kind of content did you post there? Will you be posting the same here? i mostly posted rambles about whatever came to mind ("ray's rambles")
What are some other online platforms where people can find you now? you can find me on these sites: letterboxd, bluesky, my website, itch.io, and pillowfort. though, it's worth noting that i do not spend equal time or effort on all these sites. in fact, i'm mostly just testing them out to see if i'm compatible with the current environment on each of them. that is to say, i make no guarantee of being active much of anywhere just yet
Who were some of your Cohost friends that you hope to find on Dreamwidth or elsenet? i've already made contact with most of the people i want to keep in touch with (some of which are here, hi friends!!), and the others have links on their cohost accounts. but i'm willing to help other people find their friends if there's a way for me to help!
Do you have anything else important to share that will help networking? i mostly share thoughts and art (less frequent), and i'm always open to friendship (new and rekindled). i'm in a few discord servers that sprung up after the shutdown announcement was made. if any of you need those links, please let me know <3
Hello!
Date: Oct. 2nd, 2024 04:43 am (UTC)That is very prudent. It's also why I try to reach out to newcomers here. If people can quickly learn how to use a site, find content they like, and make some friends then they're much more likely to stick around.

Yay! \o/
>> and the others have links on their cohost accounts. but i'm willing to help other people find their friends if there's a way for me to help! <<
There is. Cohost folks are tractive, they stick together, meaning they are finding each other -- so you're likely to run into more here. When you do, point them to this community.
>> i mostly share thoughts and art (less frequent), <<
Art is a very popular topic on Dreamwidth. There are lots of icon communities, some art-based events, and communities like
>> and i'm always open to friendship (new and rekindled).<<
I hope you find lots of friends here.

Date: Oct. 4th, 2024 09:45 pm (UTC)Yay! I'm so happy to see some other dual users on here. You-all will be the most useful in explaining how to make the transition, since you're familiar with both platforms. A couple of other dual users have make great explanatory posts. Anything you feel would be helpful in this regard, if you post on your blog, you're welcome to post here or vice versa.

I've noticed a lot of Cohost users mentioning prompts, which seems to have been a big thing over there. I'm loving

Thank you so much! This isn't an area I can easily cover because I don't code. I have added these to the "Dreamwidth Code" section of Cohost Is Closing. Are there other communities you would recommend for Dreamwidth coding? Or parts of that section that could use improving? I had to put something, but most of that is "here are links to stuff by people who actually know what they're doing with a computer."
